Tommy on a Uptown 8

All over North America, people are working together to make bicycling a bigger part of our transportation mix-creating safe and convenient bicycle routes, teaching riding skills, and sharing cycling's great potential to improve personal, community and global health.

We bicyclists have many friends in groups such as the health community, urban planners, educators, politicians, "road" scholars/engineers, environmentalists, walkers, and more. Here are a few sites that can connect you with what's happening.

  • The League of American Bicyclists represents the interests of the nation's 42.5 million bicyclists and works to bring better bicycling to your community.

  • Safe Routes to SchoolsSafe Routes to School programs work to get more children walking and biking to school safely, through education, engineering, and partnerships with government, schools and law enforcement. This link is to our local program, a project of the Marin County Bicycle Coalition.

  • The Thunderhead Alliance is working to create, strengthen and unite state and local bicycle advocacy organizations. They can connect you with bicycle transportation enthusiasts and advocates in your area, or help you form a group of your own.

  • Trips for Kids provides mountain bike outings to kids who would not otherwise experience these activities. Their trips combine lessons in personal responsibility, achievement and environmental awareness.
  • The National Center for Bicycling and Walking encourages walking and bicycling as a normal, routine part of daily life. This site tells how to help create neighborhoods and communities where people walk and bicycle.

  • The Surface Transportation Policy Project works to ensure safer communities and smarter transportation choices that enhance the economy, improve public health, promote social equity, and protect the environment.

  • Detour Publications is a non-profit specializing in sustainable transportation books and media. Cyclists, environmental groups, governments, educators, community organizations, planners and others use Detour products for research, advocacy and educational purposes.
